Yesterday’s adventure

Wednesday, December 11th, 2002

Well yesterday’s bike ride was quite an adventure even though I’ve covered all the bike paths that we rode before.

Started out in South Yarra where Rebekah lives and also because we had to borrow a bike for her dutch friend Michael. By this time it was probably 4pm. Though a little incident did occur in Toorak Rd with a taxi driver who wasn’t watching where he was going, everything went fine and smooth.

Packing was where the fun begun. Between as we had to take beer, food, etc. Since I had two panniers, I was happy to take most of the load so I took a six pack of beer and a melways. The others took sausages, biscuits and salad in their backpacks.

We mainly followed the course of the Yarra (where the bike path goes alongside it) past the Carlton & United Breweries, past Dights Falls and through Fairfield Park until we got to the Yarra Flats Park in Heidelberg. In 1.5 hours we had covered approx 30km.

Arriving at the Yarra Flats, we decided that it was time to end our ride and have our barbecue. As it turned out though, the barbeques were wood fire barbeques. We were expecting electric barbecues! Fortunately a workman in the park lent us a lighter (it’s times like these that it’s good to have smokers around!) and not before long we had a fire going. As it turned out, my cooler bag, along with an esky ice-pack had kept our beer ice-cold. Nothing like sitting by a fire eating sausages and drinking beer!

Unfortunately, getting home by train wasn’t much fun. We ended up waiting for half an hour for a train at Heidelberg before we got off at Jolimont and rode to Richmond station in time to get a Frankston train to Hawksburn to take the borrowed bike back. After that I got to Richmond to wait another half hour for a train.
